The ellipsis (…, Unicode U+2026 HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS) marks omitted words or a sentence that trails off. It is a single character, which is what separates it from the three consecutive periods (...) most people type instead. The real ellipsis keeps its dots evenly spaced and never breaks across a line, and a spell checker or typesetting engine treats the two differently. Unicode also encodes a vertically centred variant, the midline ellipsis ⋯ (U+22EF), used in mathematics and in CJK typography where dots sit at mid-height rather than on the baseline. Chinese and Japanese convention doubles the mark to six dots spanning two full character widths (…… or ⋯⋯), which is why the Chinese name for it, 刪節號, describes a two-space mark rather than a single character.

Typing three full stops looks close but is three separate characters: they can be split across a line break, they space unevenly in justified text, and find-and-replace treats them as different strings. The vertical and diagonal dot variants below are separate mathematical characters again, not styling choices.
Chinese and Japanese typography writes the ellipsis as six dots across two character widths, produced by doubling the character rather than by any dedicated codepoint. Traditional Chinese usage generally centres the dots (⋯⋯); Simplified Chinese and Japanese more often sit them on the baseline (……).
